Formal Education

The Formal Education Program, from Grades 1 through 12, serves 81 students, who range in ages from 6 to 16.

SCHOOL CURRICULUM

The School uses a combination of international and Indonesian curricula which is ideal for educating both Indonesian and foreign-born children in a common environment, providing an excellent opportunity for cross-cultural exchange and understanding, and contributes to our collaborative educational environment.

Indonesian students participate in National examinations from Jakarta (Indonesia’s Capital) and provincial examinations from Palangka Raya district Educational Office. In the future, we plan to offer an international high school certificate such as Cambridge IGCSE or the International Baccalaureate.

The international component of the curriculum is open-ended and aims to raise inquisitiveness and interest in the subject through enquiry and project based learning. Thus the students are included in the teaching/learning process. This stimulates their curiosity and makes them want to learn more and understand better. A space is created in which there is enough time for teacher and students to complete a subject to the full – memorization is replaced by memorable moments in the process of learning.

Depending on the type of project, upon completion, students may present the result of their research to the rest of the class, to other students during the school assembly or to students at other schools. This way the students are actively involved in the learning process, from asking the first questions, to researching the answers, presenting their findings and sharing their knowledge with others. The teacher acts more as a facilitator and guide while the students are actively engaged in each stage of the process.

As well as academic excellence, BCU School also nurtures:

  1. A sense of humanity
  2. A social conscience
  3. Environmental awareness
  4. Racial and religious tolerance
  5. Individuality and self-worth
  6. Creativity and compassion
  7. Self-discipline
  8. Independent and responsible learning
